A West Ham "Hard Man" Squad!
Chosen from only players I have seen live. A few nutters in here but also those who put a foot in and were brave sometimes too brave like Patsy Holland. Not sure if I've made a ricket leaving out Lampard Senior!

Would have to be a 352 with wing backs!

2 Ray Stewart
3 Julian Dicks
4 Stuart Pearce
5 Neil Ruddock
6 Alvin Martin
7 Martin Allen
8 Billy Bonds
9 John Hartson

For those asking me about Carl Fletchers comment to Lampard, I was sure he took him out with a great tackle and then stood over him and said ‘get up you fat fuck’ or something similar, but seems I’ve totally made that up as it’s nowhere on google/YouTube...

Yeah great, players who made the game shit.

It's apparent 'hard men' that took away years of actual football talent from the likes of Devonshire. Absolute wankers, and ten a penny.

Didn’t Matthew Rush come out on top in a training ground scrap with Alvin once.

Nice obituary on Andy Malcolm...

There wasn't much Johnny Haynes, the Fulham and England midfield general of the 1950s and '60s, didn't know about the fellow footballers who set out to prevent him from displaying his crowd-pleasing artistry – and he described Andy Malcolm as a butcher.

The unobtrusive but unremittingly tough Malcolm was indeed a formidable enforcer who tackled ruthlessly and was tenacious when marking an opposing danger man, especially during his prime with West Ham United. Yet he was deceptively skilful, a precise and perceptive passer endowed with more subtle shades of ability than most ball-winning wing-halves of his era.

Quiet and unassuming, Malcolm was known for his dry humour. Before one match with Chelsea in which he was detailed to subdue the menace of the brilliant young goalscorer Jimmy Greaves, he muttered darkly to his team-mate John Bond, "If the little blighter gets past me, just chip him back in my direction."

Tal Ben Haim. I remember him ruthlessly dealing with Jermaine Pennant in a cup game for us.

Nobody has yet mentioned Eddie Bovington. An old fashioned half back not particularly big built but he could put himself about in a way that was both unobtrusive and effective. Not for him the look at me show stopping leveller but more the sort of tackle that left his opponent knowing there was more of the same to come.

Forgot about Stimac. Didn't he and Hartson have a problem before they became team mates?

It is always difficult to judge "how good" one generation's top players compare to another. Really you can only judge it in comparison to others at the time. The players I listed where hard players that form the bedrock of a team that rose from mediocrity in Division 2 to finish 6th in Division 1 in their first season. They played an exciting revolutionary exciting attacking style which many labelled "the West Ham way". John Bond, for example, could play one game at right-back or turn out at centre forward and not look out of place. Who does that today? These players laid the foundation for the environment in which the likes of Moore Hurst and Peters could develop into truly World Class players. At that time it wasn't just about winning it was about leading the way which what we did.

How good were those guys? Before my time and only seen clips but always been fascinated by The Academy with some of those you mention like Alison, Bond and Cantwell. So many ended up as good managers or coaches. It's quite baffling how this Club didn't win more. Probably a case of always having 6 or 7 top quality and the rest being crap!
